R.H. Stokes & Sons Funeral Chapel was founded in 1904 by Robert H. Stokes. Robert was an ordained Methodist minister, a wallpaper hanger and a picture frame maker. He established his funeral chapel and by 1917 had also established the first motorized ambulance service in Eau Claire. He also served as Eau Claire County Coroner for many years. He passed away in 1940.
Robert had three sons, Vernon, Wallace and Robert. Vernon and Wallace followed their dad into the family business. His son Robert became a teacher and later a principal. They purchased the Coca Cola Bottling plant on First and Grand Ave, added on to the building and opened their new funeral chapel in 1941.
Vernon’s son Donald joined the firm in 1950. Wallace died suddenly around 1953. Vernon and Donald operated the funeral chapel until Vernon’s death in 1979. Donald had purchased Eick Funeral Home in Fall Creek, shortly before Vernon’s death.
In 1985, Randall and Jean Mundt joined the firm. They were hired to manage it, and had the first option to purchase. In 1987, they purchased the stock and renamed the firm Stokes & Mundt Funeral Chapel, Eau Claire and Fall Creek.
In December of 2001 the new Stokes & Mundt Funeral Chapel and Crematory was opened in Altoona. The old building on First Ave was purchased by the city, torn down and returned to green space. In 2007 Randall and Jean purchased the stock of Prock Funeral Home and Cremation Society of Wisconsin. They relocated all operations to the Altoona location, including the Fall Creek location.

TZ bought Randall & Jean Mundt out on January 1, 2024 and he will continue serving the families of the Chippewa Valley and surrounding areas with the same compassion and care
