Sylvia Carlson
February 26, 1940 — September 11, 2024
Sylvia H. Carlson of Chippewa Falls, WI, (formally of Colby, WI) left this world to join the angels watching over us on September 11, 2024, at the age of 84. She was born in Rock Hill, South Carolina, on February 26, 1940, to David M. and Lois (Patterson) Hyler. Sylvia graduated from Lexington High School in 1958, and briefly attended Winthrop College, Rock Hill, SC, before marrying the love of her life, Lyle Carlson. Sylvia and Lyle were married in South Carolina on May 27, 1962, and resided there until relocating to Dorchester, WI, living close by Lyle's family.
Sylvia was a devoted wife and mother to her three children: Lisa, Glenda, and Penny. Once the three girls were in school, Sylvia was employed at the Dorchester Library as a librarian, working with her mother-in-law, Ruth Carlson. She was also a real estate agent, working at a local agency in Medford with Lyle and sister-in-law, Carole Herman. After retiring from realty, she worked at Pamida in Abbotsford, where she was an associate and helped in the office. When Pamida was bought by Shopko Hometown, she was a clerk in the pharmacy.
Sylvia was involved in her community and church. From assisting in the Parent Teacher Association at the grade school in Dorchester, to being an active member at Peace United Church of Christ in Dorchester, participating in the Evening Circle (the women's group) and teaching Sunday School. When they moved to Chippewa Falls, she became a member of Plymouth United Church of Christ in Eau Claire. Sylvia will be deeply remembered for her love of books and reading, the generosity to her family, her love to all, sharp humor, and respect for honesty.
Sylvia will be sadly missed by her loving husband, Lyle Carlson; sister, Olivia (Wayne) Shealy; sister-in-law, Judy Hyler; sister- and brother-in laws, Carole and Joe Herman; daughters, Glenda Carlson (Scott) and Penny Carlson; three granddaughters, Veronica (Dan) Kasper, Samantha (Julio) Andrade, and Sabrina (Neil) Cooper; and seven great-grandchildren, with another one on the way; as well as many cousins, nephews, and nieces.
Sylvia is preceded in death by her parents, David and Lois Hyler; brother, Robert Hyler; daughter, Lisa Carlson; in-laws, Lloyd and Ruth Carlson; and brother- and sister in-laws, Jerome and Arlene Rankl.
The memorial service will be held at Plymouth United Church of Christ, 2010 Moholt Drive, Eau Claire, on September 21, 2024. The visitation will be at 10 a.m. with the service at 11 a.m., and a meal to follow. Sylvia's seven+ great-grandchildren will be the honorary pallbearers.
The family requests no flowers, but donations can be made to Plymouth United Church of Christ's project fund in her honor.
