Robert Munden
April 11, 1931 — October 25, 2024
Robert Gerald Munden (Bob), a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at Dove West on Friday evening, October 25th. Born to Guy and Cora Munden (née Berg) on April 11, 1931, Bob was the youngest of eight children. His early life was marked by the loss of his mother, who died in childbirth when he was two years old.
He grew up in Robbinsdale Minnesota, and as a young man he began working as a truck driver. Shortly after that, he met the love of his life, Boletta Nau. Their courtship was interrupted when Bob was drafted into the army to serve in Korea. There, he continued to drive a truck, which he affectionately named “Bolet” after his sweetheart back home. Upon his return, the couple were married on July 25, 1954, and they would go on to spend 70 years together, celebrating their anniversary only a few months ago.
In 1968, the family moved from Minneapolis to Altoona, Wisconsin, where Bob continued to work as a field engineer for IBM until his retirement in 1987. After leaving IBM, he enjoyed working as a maintenance technician at Sears, a courier for L&M Mail Service, and a volunteer at the Eau Claire Visitor’s Center. Bob and Boletta were longtime active members of St. John’s Lutheran Church. His engaging, affable personality made him a big favorite wherever he was.
Bob cherished family time, including numerous camping trips across the country and family reunions in many states. He made annual Christmas sleigh rides a tradition and especially looked forward to summer vacations at Mogasheen Resort in northern Wisconsin. These were always a highlight for him and Boletta, as well as their children (along with their spouses), grandchildren, great-grandchildren, aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was known for his loud laugh, playful humor, and knack for silly accents. Bob also had a special talent for finding the goofiest Christmas presents for his grandkids, who fondly remember his infamous “Grandpa Gifts.” The only thing that disrupted his cheerful personality was his hatred for strawberry shortcake!
Bob is survived by his wife Boletta; sister, Betty Ann Anderson, of Minneapolis; his five children, Scott (Ruth) Munden, Todd (Peggy) Munden, Mary (Karl) Kruschke, Doug (Jeanine) Munden, and Jane Munden; as well as twelve grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, November 11, 2024, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 1804 Highland Ave, Eau Claire, with Pastor Christine Emerson officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Inurnment will be at the Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Spooner at a later date.
In lieu of flowers or plants, the family requests that donations be made in Bob’s memory to Feed My People or a charity of your choice. His legacy of love, laughter, and family connection will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
