Robert “Lee” Johnson, 89, passed away on the morning of January 23rd, 2024. Born April 29th, 1934 in Rockford, Illinois to Robert E. and Kathryn A. (Knodle) Johnson.
Lee graduated from Rockford East High School and the University of Illinois, where he was a proud member of the SAE Fraternity. Lee married his high school sweetheart Jean Nelson on August 31st, 1957. Their love story was one of Lee‘s most prized memories. Born in the same hospital a day apart it was their destiny to be together. Lee and Jean met at Johnson’s Family Restaurant where he had his first job as a soda jerk. Lee became known as the “fastest banana cutter” which he took great pride in showing off. Jean and Lee went on to become restaurant owners of their own in Rockford including local favorite Stash O’ Neil’s. Lee also made his mark as a commercial real estate broker. Lee always recalled one of the best times of his life was with his “Party Group.” Shout out to all the party group members. Cheers to the reunion!
Lee had a contagious personality. He was known for his sense of humor, playfulness and always wanting to have a good time. Everybody knows how much he liked to joke and tease. Lee, aka “Mr. Fix It”, was a jack of all trades. If he wasn’t fixing something at the restaurant or at home, he was tinkering with motors, whether it be cars, boats, or even golf carts. His projects were endless.
Lee spent his summers at Long Lake in Wisconsin and winters in Fort Myers Beach, Florida where he never missed a sunset on the porch. Lee had a real passion for music and loved to blast the tunes while driving his pontoon boat. He also enjoyed dancing, golfing and watching his Green Bay Packers.
Lee has been an inspiration to so many people. He will be deeply missed, his memory, forever etched in the hearts of those fortunate enough to have known him.
Survived by his daughter Jill (Fred) Weaver, son Marshall (Amy) Johnson, his 7 grandchildren Kelly, Jaret (Anna), Rob (Madison), Dayvas (Rick), Lauren, Alina, Kirsten, and six great-grandchildren Venice, Ricky, Wyatt, Weston, Mattea, and Petra.
