Raymond Nelson
February 23, 1935 — December 28, 2023
Raymond M (Skip) Nelson, age 88, passed away peacefully on December 28th, 2023, in his home surrounded by his loving family. Raymond was born February 23rd, 1935, to the late Raymond H and Elizabeth A (Fosbinder) Nelson.
They raised Raymond and his three younger siblings in the belief that all things are possible with family, love, and hard work. Something Ray carried with him all through his life. In 1951, while working full time at the age of 16 he met the love of his life Bonnie Rae. Getting her to go out on a date with him only as a dare. They dated through his enlistment into the US Army in 1954, marrying January 1st, 1955. She joined him overseas where he was stationed as a clerk in Germany. During his time in the service, they traveled all over Germany, France, England, and Holland (tulip season in Holland always being their favorite). Ray was honorably discharged as a Sergeant in 1956, they then returned home to Kenosha, WI where they began raising their family.
They were blessed with seven children: Steven (Kathleen) Nelson, Berlin, WI, Richard (Donna) Nelson, Stacy, MN, Carol (Randy Rhodes) Nelson, Stevens Point, WI, Susan Nelson, Iola, WI, Carrie (Mark) Shipman, Poy Sippi, WI, the late Kathryn Nelson, and John (Jaime) Nelson, Iola, WI.
Raymond eventually went back to school, not only earning his GED but continuing his education with many College courses, all while working full time in the transportation field ending up with Chrysler (known at the time as American Motors Corporation). He moved the family to their final home in Iola, WI in 1976 traveling back and forth over weekends until his retirement from AMC in 1988. Ray continued to work long into retirement, most known for his work for the Rosholt School District as their transportation supervisor and bus driver.
To know Ray was to count him a dear friend, father, or grandfather; simply put, if you knew him, he treated you as family. Always one known for his generosity, understanding, compassion, and wisdom. He was young at heart and wise beyond his years.
He is survived by his six living children, their partners, and 48 grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren. He was most recently preceded in death by his sister Sharon, daughter, wife, granddaughter and far too many friends/loved ones.
As per his wishes, Raymond will be laid to rest along with his beloved wife of 57 years at a private burial with full military honors in February. A public memorial is in plans for Summer of 2024.
Cremation Society of Wisconsin, Altoona is assisting the family. Online condolences may be shared at
