Mary Shock

April 25, 1933 — April 2, 2025

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Mary A. Shock who died peacefully on April 2, 2025.

Mary, born on April 25, 1933, in Minneapolis, MN, was the firstborn child to Donald and Cecelia Nadeau. She was later joined by her siblings James, Nancy, Thomas, LaVonne and Richard. They moved to Boyd, WI in 1937 and in 1947 to Chippewa Falls, WI where Mary graduated from McDonald High School in 1951. She then attended Northwest Institute of Medical Technology.

In 1949 Mary's life was forever changed when she agreed to a blind date with a handsome and witty young man from Stanley, WI, Dean Shock. It didn't take long for them to realize they had found something extraordinary in each other. Their love story had a few twists and turns; Dean had enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served from 1951-1955 as a member of the Air Police. Dean was stationed in Africa during the Korean Conflict. Despite their separation, their love and courtship blossomed through letter writing. In 1952 they were engaged and then married on Easter Sunday, April 5, 1953, in Lake Charles, LA. While Dean finished out his tour in the Air Force they lived in Lake Charles where Mary worked in a local hospital.

In 1955 they moved back to Stanley, WI and bought a beautiful home on Broadway. Their family grew quickly as they welcome their 5 children from 1955 -1967. Despite being busy with five children, Mary also worked for 30 years as a lab and x-ray technician in the Stanley and Thorp area. Never one to stop learning she went to Wisconsin School of Real Estate and worked for Szatalowicz Realty. Still not quite satisfied that she couldn't meet one more challenge, she ran for and was elected as the Municipal Justice of Stanley.

Mary also found time to serve on the board of Holy Family Parish, Indian Waters Girl Scout Council and was an active member of Catholic Women's Club.

After many years of being a hardworking, community minded couple, they retired and moved to their cabin on Lake Holcombe which became their permanent home until they moved to Wissota Place/Lake House in Chippewa Falls, in 2020.

Mary and Dean enjoyed traveling and vacationed in Hawaii, Mexico City, Costa Rica and Jamaica. They spent 27 winters in Florida, gaining even more friends from the US and Canada.

Mary was an avid quilter and won many ribbons for her excellent workmanship. She had a huge garden, loved to can, and cook but most of all she loved to......Fish! While learning the sport, and practicing her casting skills, she managed to hook Dean in the head which required a trip to the emergency room. While Dean was her biggest catch, she spent many years out fishing the rest of us.

Mary is survived by her children, Kim Harris, Jill (John) Hogan, Thomas (Michelle) Shock, and Desiree (John) Woller. Grandchildren Isaiah, Amy, Abe (Robyn), Sarah (Kyle), Lucas (Jacci), Joy (Jake), Andrew (Brittany), Taylor (Jordie), Sadie, Kip (Cassandra), Alice and Jackie. Great-grandchildren Brett, Juniper, Gracie, Cora and Miles. Brother, Thomas (Patty) and sister, Lavonne (Randy). Extended family James, Shannon and Miley Schlough and Kloey Black.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband Dean, whom passed just 27 days prior to her. Never celebrating an anniversary apart, fate decided to reunite them in time for their 72nd anniversary, no doubt dancing to their favorite song "Waltz Across Texas". She was also welcomed home by her youngest son, Joseph, son-in-law Jimmy Harris, her sister Nancy and brothers James and Richard.

Mary and Dean's family would like to thank all the caregivers from Heartland Hospice and Our House Memory Care that provided wonderful care to them in their final days.
