Mary Margaret (Meg) Hermes, 59, of Elk Mound, passed away peacefully on June 9, 2023 at her home surrounded by her family. Meg was diagnosed with cancer in April of 2022. She fought hard and continued to fight up until her last breath.
Meg was born to Cindy and Jerry Gates on April 5, 1964. She lived a life filled with hard work, family, and travel. She was loyal, loving, and did things the right way. Those who knew Meg will never forget her work ethic, laughter, and loving heart. She grew up in Mondovi and graduated from Memorial High School. She had a lifelong love for horses. She belonged to Midnight Riders and Wisconsin Girls Barrel Racing Association, where she competed across several states.
Meg was adventurous and moved to Hawaii when she was 21 years old where she worked at Chi-Chi’s and Hawaiian Cruise Lines. Meg returned to Wisconsin and soon met her husband, Ron Hermes, and started a family. Meg was a Travel Agent with AAA for over ten years and a Business Solutions Expert with Excel Energy for almost 20 years. She often worked two jobs, working as a waitress during the evenings for many years. She was an avid DIYer around the house and kept Ron busy.
Meg devoted so much of her time to her kids, her pets, and her work. Her family was at the core of Meg’s life. She spent much of her life with her grandparents, parents, siblings, cousins, nieces, nephews, and others whom she loved dearly. She cherished her role as a mother, providing unrelenting love, support, and guidance to all her kids. She created a home filled with laughter, animals, and countless cherished memories.
Meg’s kids and family loved the food she made. Meg loved Mexican food and was known for her taco dip at family events. Her kids and husband will forever miss her “chicken stuff”, steak sandwiches, egg bake, biscuits and gravy, and chocolate chip cookies.
Meg is preceded in death by her father Jerry Gates, grandparents Ruth and Gerald Gates, and Jane and Hewitt Loomis, aunts Kathy Olson and Sally Pfund, uncles Thomas Loomis and Douglas Loomis, and cousin Kimberly Davis.
Meg is survived by husband Ron Hermes, children Aimee (Joe) Wagner, Alyssa (Bryce) Blaeser, Hunter (Taylor) Hermes, and Drew Hermes, brothers Mike Gates, Mitch (Polly) Johnson, and Monty (Chrissy) Johnson, sister Missy (David) Dregney, mother Cindy Johnson, grandchildren Mo, Makayla, James, Bode, and Remi, pets Brutus, Teddy, Oliver, Daze, Kelvin, Perrserker, Handsome, Sage, and countless chickens.
We want to include a special thank you to Teresa Hermes, Meg’s sister-in-law, and Mayo Care Team for the incredible love and care they provided Meg during the last months of her life. The loss of Meg leaves behind emptiness and sorrow in the lives of many. Her memory will forever remain in our hearts, and her spirit will continue to guide us.
