Memories of Mom
Margaret (Marge) Leona (Bystrom) Nelson age 94, passed away in her sleep on Tues. Feb 14, 2024. She lived a long and rich life filled with family and many friends. For the past 9 months she lived at Madonna Meadows Assisted Living in Rochester, MN and made many new friends. She was loved by many and will be deeply missed.
Marge, as she preferred to be called, was born to Vernon and Dora Bystrom on Aug 12, 1929 in Hager City, Wisconsin, in the family home. After graduating from Ellsworth High School in 1948, she was employed in the office of the Red Wing Shoe company.
One evening at a church gathering for young adults, Marge saw a young man across the room. She excitedly told her sister Betty, that’s the man I’m going to marry. On May 3, 1952, she married Robert Nelson in the Ellsworth Covenant Church. Together they raised 3 children, Craig, Judy and Beth.
Over the years she helped to design 6 of the homes they built. Summer weekends were spent at the cabin on Lake Magnor. Family and friends spent time fishing, swimming and playing games. Marge was a homemaker, active at Bethel Covenant Church and helped to manage an apartment building in River Falls. After the children left home, Marge decided to enroll at Eau Claire Technical School and become an LPN, something she always wanted to do. She worked at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire, Highlands Hospital in Sebring, Florida and Dallas Rehab in Dallas, Wisconsin.
For 20 years Marge and Bob drove to their home in Sebring Florida to enjoy friends and the warmer weather. Summers were spent in Chetek, Wisconsin and Marge enjoyed fishing, pontoon boat rides, breakfast at Bob’s Café, entertaining friends and family. She always had a deck of Skip-Bo cards on her table ready to play a game. She enjoyed shopping for clothes and was always well dressed. She would say, “Don’t tell dad how much money we spent, tell him how much we saved!”
Mom was a good cook and frequently made delicious meals for family and would often bring meals to friends even at the age of 93. Jell-O was one of her favorite foods. As a child who grew up in the depression, sweet treats were rare. The first time she tasted Jell-O, she loved it and said, “When I grow up, I’m going to have Jell-O every day.” She was true to her word and few meals were complete without Jell-o!
Mom developed close and lasting friendships with her friends and neighbors that lasted a life time. Marge loved the Lord with all her heart and enjoyed telling others about him. Over the past few years she read many books on Heaven and spoke frequently about how beautiful Heaven must be. She was ready to go to her heavenly home. John 14 was her favorite chapter in the Bible, especially verses 1-4.
“Do not let your hearts be troubles. Trust in God trust in me also. In my Father’s house are many rooms, if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.”
She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Nelson of 71 years, parents Vernon and Dora Bystrom, brother Gaylord Bystrom and wife Joan, sister Betty Williams and husband Dennis, and son in laws Mark Knutson and Ray Narveson.
Marge is survived by son Craig Nelson and wife Pat, daughter Judy Narveson, daughter Beth Knutson and fiancé Jeff Allman, sister in law Margaret Nelson, 9 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
Service will be held at Renew Church in Eau Claire, Wisconsin on Saturday, March 23, at 11 am followed by a light lunch. Memorials preferred to Benedictine Madonna Meadows Assisted Living in Rochester. There will be a private burial with immediate family at a later date.
God Saw She was Getting Tired
God saw she was getting tired
And a cure was not to be, So He put His arms around her
And whispered, “Come with Me.”
With tearful eyes we watched her suffer
And saw her fade away,
Although we loved her dearly
We could not make her stay.
A golden heart stopped beating
Hard working hands to rest,
God broke our hearts to prove to us,
He only takes the best.
