Joyce M. Mathews (Schwantes) - Obituary

07/21/1938 - 12/14/2023

Joyce M. Mathews (Schwantes) 85 of Altoona, Wisconsin passed away December 14, 2023 of natural causes. Joyce was born to Ernst and Irene (Blair) Schwantes in 1938 in Two Rivers, Wisconsin.

Joyce was a devoted Christian who loved ensuring all her children and grandchildren had the opportunity to hear the gospel. Her true joy was cooking, gifting, and praying for her seven children, 17 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren. She authored a unique and personalized cook-book for each of her children that demonstrated her humor and great trade-mark recipes.

Joyce would often be found kindly giving her small amounts of saved-up money to her kids and grandkids. She would kindly and secretly give the money, and then close by saying “don’t tell your dad or grandfather that I gave you anything.” It was her way of feeling she gave what she could without letting anyone else know. She would also take great pleasure in gifting each great grandchild with a special toy from her prized basket of small toys she kept handy year-round.

Joyce was married to Norman D. Mathews who preceded her to heaven in 2022. She and Norman were married for 66-years. They enjoyed a wonderful marriage and gave birth to seven children. Joyce and Norman also raised three wonderful grandchildren Stephen, Douglas, and Jaimie Franze.

Joyce will always be remembered for her incredible cooking and prayerful way of seeing the best in all her children. She will always be remembered for singing the song “Somewhere in outer space God has prepared a place for all those who trust Him and obey. All though we don’t know when, Jesus will come again, for those who trust Him and obey. Ten and nine – eight and seven -- six and five and four – call upon the Savior while you may; one and two -- coming through the clouds in bright array, call upon the savior while you may.” Joyce called upon her Savior and her personal countdown was an incredible arrival into heaven, where she will live for eternity.

Joyce Mathews is survived by her children: Norman Mathews, Michael (Pam) Mathews, Susan (Larry) Ison, Nancy (David) Nation, Mark (Laura) Mathews, and sisters: Marian (James) Close, and Kay (Richard) Sheffer. Joyce is also survived by her sisters-in-law Donna Schwantes and Irene Schwantes.

Joyce was preceded in death by her husband Norman D. Mathews, parents: Ernst and Irene, Brothers: Ernst L. Schwantes and Carl Schwantes. Children: Debra Mathews and Jeff (Sonya) Mathews.
