John was born in Cook County, Illinois on April 7, 1945 to Gladys Witt and Harold Bennett. He left this world on July 13, 2024 at Mayo Hospital in Eau Claire, with his family by his side.
John moved to the Drummond area as a young boy and graduated from Drummond High School in 1963. He attended UMD and Wisconsin Technical College. John had several jobs in his lifetime. In his teen years, he hauled logs for a logger. He then worked at John Deere, Bell Telephone, and as an installer of fiber optic cable in the eastern United States. He was later employed by Bayfield County before retiring in 2009. After retiring, John served on the Bayfield County Board for several years.
In 1989, he went to visit his Mom in Drummond before heading to Phoenix for a job offer with the city. There he met the love of his life, Karen Stuber Dickerhoff, who just happened to stop by to see her. It was fate that brought them together, and he then decided to turn down the job offer. John and Karen were married on June 9, 1990, and have celebrated 34 wonderful years together.
John was very active in the Elks Lodge, serving in several offices and on local, state and national committees. In 1995, he was elected as the Exalted Ruler of Ashland Lodge No. 137. At the State Convention he was awarded the Exalted Ruler of the Year by the then State Elks President Keith Simmons. In 1998, he was elected as the Elks State President-Elect and was installed into the office of Elks State President in 1999, serving until 2000. Following his presidency, he served as State Trustee for several years, as well as Vice-President for the Elks North District. In 2011 he was honored as the State Elk of the Year by then State President Bob Bohnsack.
John and Karen traveled around the country for several years to Elks and Does functions and National Conventions, where they formed many lasting friendships. In 2015, they celebrated their 25
th
wedding anniversary with a cruise around the Hawaiian Islands. When Karen was the National President of the Does in 2006-2007, John served as the “Bullshipper” President, a group comprised of the husbands/significant others of the Does in attendance at the Convention with their main goal to raise money for the Does charities.

John loved spending a quiet evening at home with Karen, but his family was also very important to him and he enjoyed spending time with them. While he loved his whole family, his great-grandchildren were a very special blessing to him and he loved to brag about them to anyone who would listen. His Great-Grandson Bentley gave him the nickname Papa Sherm, and he will always be remembered as Papa Sherm.
