Joanne Marie (Staniec) Wittek, 75, of Thorp, WI, passed away on August 3rd, 2024, in Thorp surround by family after her four-year battle with Melanoma.
Born on February 18th, 1949, Joanne was the daughter of Frank and Sophia (Soprych) Staniec. She grew up on her family farm near Owen-Withee, WI, attending grade school at Clark School. After graduating from Owen-Withee High School in 1967, she pursued higher education, earning her Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Wisconsin River Falls in 1970.
In 1969, Joanne married her long-time high school sweetheart, David Wittek, at St. Olaf Catholic Church in Eau Claire, WI. Together, they moved to Thorp, WI, where they raised their three children: Janay, Jeff, and Jason.
Joanne’s musical talents brought joy to the community. She served as the choir director for both Thorp Catholic Parochial School and Thorp High School. Additionally, she led the choir at St. Bernard-St. Hedwig Catholic Church and organized various youth music activities. Joanne was an active member of the Clark County Choraliers and a leader in the Northern Lights 4-H club. She also supported local youth and her own children in FFA and livestock showing.
Passionate about education, Joanne earned her Master’s degree in Education from the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire. She dedicated her career to teaching, serving as the Reading Specialist at Owen-Withee School District until her retirement in 2006.
During retirement, Joanne enjoyed gardening, traveling, and spending time with her grandchildren. She and her husband, David, spent winters in Tucson, AZ, where Joanne immersed herself in photography, participated in various choirs and bell tone groups, and found joy in creating stained glass art and painting.
Joanne is survived by her husband, David, and their children: Janay (Rodney Stengl) Wittek, Jeff (Beth) Wittek, and Jason (Veronica) Wittek. Her five grandchildren—Brandon, Sam, Cooper, Parker, and Adriana—were a source of immense pride and love. Joanne is also survived by her mother, Sophia Staniec, and her sister, Diane (Roger) Peters. She was preceded in death by her father, Frank Staniec.
A Celebration of Life will take place with family and friends at a later date.
