Jerry Lee Ross
February 27, 1948 - March 17, 2024
Jerry Ross, 76, of Hayward, WI passed away peacefully at his home after a brief battle with cancer.
A lifelong Hayward resident, Jerry grew up on a small dairy farm in the Moose Lake area with his parents and sister, where he developed his strong work ethic. He graduated from Hayward High School in 1966, after which he attended the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point from which he graduated in 1971 with a degree in geography. In 1973 he married Sue (Pope) and together they raised three children.
Jerry was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing and trapping which led him to follow in his father’s footsteps, as a logger and fishing guide in the Hayward area. At the age of 15 he started guiding and continued to keep is guide calendar booked with new and previous clients for the next 61 years. His unique knowledge of all area lakes was second to none. Sharing that knowledge and history with his clients was what made him such a special and sought after guide. His clients returned year after year and generation after generation; many of them becoming his life-long friends. Jerry was a longtime member of the Hayward Guide Service and also enjoyed volunteering for Fishing Has No Boundaries. He was inducted into the National Fishing Hall of Fame in 2018.
In the winter months, Jerry made his living in the woods logging thousands of acres of land. Jerry had been in the industry so long that he had done a second cut to several properties he had logged 30 years prior.
When Jerry wasn’t on the water guiding or in the woods logging, he was fishing or hunting for fun. The man lived to be outdoors no matter the season, weather conditions, or stacks of paperwork that needed to be filed.
You could almost set your watch by Jerry making his “rounds” at about 4:30 p.m. in the Moose Lake area to enjoy a couple beers and visiting and sharing stories with friends. Jerry was an amazing man who touched the lives of nearly everyone he met. He was friendly, soft-spoken, with a humble demeanor and a low-key sense of humor. He was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need. He was known for his gentle smile and that twinkle in his eye, which will be so greatly missed.
He is survived by his children, Erika of Wausau, WI, Ryan (Erin) of St. Joseph, MN, and Randy of Hayward; grandchildren, Kaleb, Chayden, Cheyanne and Ruby; and great-grandchildren Jacey and Kayleah. He was preceded in death by his parents Jesse and Albina, wife, Sue, sister Joan Christianson, and grandson, Kyle.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Veterans Community Center 10534 Main St. in Hayward on April 21st from 2:00-5:00pm.
