Jean Schumacher

July 8, 1937 — January 20, 2024

Jean Alice (Anderson) Schumacher was born 7/8/1937 in Elk Mound Wisconsin. She was baptized, confirmed and married at Big Elk Creek Lutheran Church which her family helped found in 1876.  She married Leonard Schumacher on 5/17/1958 and moved to the family farm in Fall Creek which was her home for over 65 years.  Together they had four children: Carrie (Earl) Conner, James (Kay) Schumacher, Diane (deceased in infancy) and Janet; six grandchildren:  Erik Stanford, Whitney Conner, Phillip Schumacher, Anthony Schumacher, Samuel Schumacher, Andrew Hermann and three great-grandchildren: Brooks, Maddox and Sadie; plus, a bonus great-grandson Wesley; and former sons-in-law Roger Stanford and Keith Hermann.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents Clarence and Jeanette Anderson, her husband Leonard, two sisters: Etta Johnson and Louise Stuart and her two youngest daughters: Diane and Janet.

She graduated from Elk Mound High School in 1954 and enjoyed keeping in touch with her classmates through class reunions.  Following high school, Jean received secretarial training which she used throughout her career working for Boy Scouts of America, Lutheran Brotherhood Insurance, American Heart Association, Aid Association for Lutherans and Wissota Lakeside.  Jean also did bookkeeping for the farm and ran a successful catering business for over 10 years.

Jean was very involved in school, church and community activities.  She never missed a school program and enjoyed her time as a Cub Scout den mother and 4H group leader.  Jean was named Northern Center volunteer of the year and later served as guardian ad litem for three former residents:  Tony, Randy and Kurt.  She was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Eau Claire serving on altar guild, attending Mary circle, teaching vacation bible school, volunteering in the office and establishing a used clothing closet for those in need.  An avid Packer fan, Jean proudly displayed her stock certificate and attended many shareholder events.  In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening, canning and reading romance novels.  Above all, Jean was happiest cooking for others and hosting celebrations at her home.

Over the years, Jean developed deep friendships with her neighbors.  The family would like to express a big thank you to Meals on Wheels and Visiting Angels for extending her stay at home.  In July of 2023 Jean moved to Neighbors of Dunn County (NDC) where she enjoyed interacting with staff, residents and visitors.  A special thank you to the entire staff at NDC for their exemplary care and to Mayo Hospice for providing comfort in her final days.
