Eau Claire, WI

James D. Peterson, a brilliant and accomplished individual whose legacy of intellect, passion, and dedication will never be forgotten, passed away on January 8, 2025, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, at the age of 62.

Born in Eau Claire, WI, on February 27, 1962, Jim was the son of Lynn and Lila Peterson, both of whom preceded him in death. He grew up in Altoona, WI, where he met his wife, Pam. Jim and Pam married on July 14, 1984. Together, they created a life full of cherished memories and unwavering support for one another. Jim was deeply proud of their two sons, Derek and Michael, and he took great joy in watching them grow into the men they are today. As a father, Jim was a steadfast guide, instilling the importance of hard work, education, and following one's passions.

Jim was a dedicated student who achieved extraordinary academic success, earning a PhD in finance from Louisiana State University in 1990. Jim also attended the University of Wisconsin for Computer Science before completing his undergraduate degree in Business at UW-Eau Claire.

Jim's career was defined by his passion for research. After earning his PhD in finance from Louisiana State University in 1990, he became a sought-after expert in the field. He began his professional career as a finance professor at Notre Dame University, where he made history as the youngest professor ever hired by the institution. A summer finance job in Chicago drew the attention of members of Charles Schwab, and in 1998, he transitioned to a long and successful career with the company. After 22 years of impactful work, Jim retired as a Chief Investment Officer. Notably, Jim never applied for a job in his career-employers actively sought him out due to his extensive knowledge and groundbreaking research, much of which continues to influence Schwab's mutual fund management today.

In addition to his work in finance, Jim was also a small business owner. As a side venture, he started two businesses, an orchard and a carwash in the Eau Claire area with his family.

A man of many passions, Jim loved fishing, hunting, golf, basketball, snowmobiling, and history. He was an enthusiastic mentor to his children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends, sharing his love of the outdoors and the beauty of Wisconsin's wilderness. His ability to mentor and inspire those around him, especially the younger generations, was one of the many ways he made a lasting impact. Jim's personality was defined by his directness and decisiveness, always making quick, confident choices in both his personal and professional life. He valued education above all else and encouraged others to pursue lifelong learning.

Jim's many achievements include excelling in high school basketball and golf, completing the Golden Gate Marathon, and establishing a scholarship for students from his hometown. His remarkable contributions to the world of finance will continue to impact generations to come.

Jim's final years were marked by a long battle with Lewy Body Dementia. His wife, Pam, and family, were by his side throughout this challenging time. In his final moments, Jim was surrounded by his beloved wife, children, and family. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated staff at St. Croix Hospice (Ellyn & Ellie), Bee Hive Memory Care, and Cornerstone Caregiving.

Jim will be remembered for his brilliant mind, his love of sharing a bottle of wine with family and friends, and mentorship to so many. Those who were fortunate enough to be near him in a moment of deep thought, know that he had a saying: "I made a decision!" In honor of that spirit, his family asks that we remember Jim not for how he passed, but for the countless memories, joy, and legacy he leaves behind.

Jim is survived by his wife, Pamela Peterson; sons Derek Peterson (Becky) of Hugo, MN, and Michael Peterson of San Diego, CA; grandchildren Ellie (3) and Walter (2); brother Michael Peterson (Beth), sister Kathy Peterson; nieces Chloe', Samantha, Nicole, Erika, Megan, Ashley, and Bella; nephews Chester, Will, and Nick; and many other family members and friends who will forever hold him in their hearts.

A celebration of life will be held at 12:00 p.m. (noon) on Saturday, February 1, 2025 at Stokes, Prock & Mundt Funeral Chapel, 535 S. Hillcrest Parkway, Altoona. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until time of service. Burial will be held at a later date at Rest Haven Cemetery, Eau Claire.

May Jim's memory live on in the hearts of all who knew him, and may his legacy inspire us to seek knowledge, embrace the outdoors, and pursue life with the same fervor he did.
