James Carlson

July 5, 1936 — July 16, 2024

James “Jim” Roger Carlson,88, of Eau Clarie passed away peacefully on Tuesday July 16 th at Prairie Pointe Memory Care surrounded by family and dear friends. A celebration of life service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, August 9, 2024 at Stokes, Prock and Mundt on Hwy 12 in Altoona, WI. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service. Luncheon to follow.

James was born July 5, 1936, to Hazel and Thomas Carlson.  He was raised in Elk Mound WI.  and graduated from Elk Mound High School in 1954 where his favorite subject was basketball.

After graduation Jim joined the Air Force with his friend Ray Lindberg. He served most of his tour in England, playing basketball on the Air Force basketball team.

He returned from the service and started working at Sterling Pulp and Paper in Eau Claire, the local papermill, until he retired in 1998 at age 62.

James married Judith Carlson in December of 1963 and they had three children:  Jean, Jim, and Jackie. The family lived on Mt. Simon in Eau Claire.

Playing softball was one of his favorite pastimes. He played for Peter’s Meats, Corky’s and various other teams throughout the years.  He loved deer hunting locally and took many trips out West with his friends as well.  Many fishing trips to Canada with his son Jimmy and friends.  Moose hunting trips in Alaska with the Eisenhuth clan. Fishing trips with Mike Stoner and Dan Janssen, too many adventures to mention.

One of the highlights of Jim’s life was a land/cruise trip to Alaska with Jackie, Brad, Michael, Judy, and Jean in 2005.  Another fun trip was one to Hawaii with Jackie, Brad, Julia, and Judith Carlson.  He always said he “could do without that plane ride” but enjoyed the LAND!

Grandpa Jim purchased a cabin up North in 1995 where he spent countless summers with his precious grandson, sidekick, and best buddy, Michael.  James was the best Grandpa ever to Michael, his “Cool Dude.” The two were inseparable.

With the help of his eldest daughter Jean, and her dedication and kindness, James was allowed to remain comfortably at his home for as long as possible.  We are deeply grateful for all she has done.

James is survived by his three children, Jean Paulson; James (Jodie) Carlson; Jackie (Brad) Gordee; three grandchildren, Michael Paulson, Julia Gordee, Aimee (Eric) Rehberg; sisters, Shirley Christopherson; Mary (Jan) Link; Lois Pichler; three great-grandchildren, Ellianna, Wesley, and Remi; ex-wife and cherished lifelong friend Judith Carlson, and his adopted grand family, Jon (Christine) Dodd, Darren, and Athens.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Hazel Carlson; father, Thomas Carlson; two brothers, George and Donald Carlson, and sister, Audrey Totten.

The family would like to extend a very special thank you to his care team at St. Croix Hospice, the staff at Prairie Pointe Memory Care and Cornerstone Caregivers, for all their loving support for our loved one throughout his journey this past year.

Cremation Society of Wisconsin, Altoona is assisting the family.  Online condolences may be shared at www.cremationsociety-wi.com .
