Hilde Bacharach
December 21, 1921 — November 22, 2023
Hilde Ludwiga (Guth) Bacharach age 101 passed away peacefully on November 22, 2023. She was born on December 21, 1921 to Franz Guth and Emma (Auer) Guth in Hof, Germany. She grew up in Regensburg, Germany and began her career as a kindergarten teacher in a small town nearby. After WWII in 1951, she was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and traveled to the USA to study education at the University of Miami at Ohio. There, she met and wed her husband John Bacharach, former Eau Claire City County Health Director. She and John began raising two boys Mike (Andy) of Sioux Falls and David (Nancy) of Eau Claire while she was earning a Master’s Degree. In 1962 she started teaching in the Foreign Language Department at UWEC. She completed her PhD in German Literature at UW-Madison in 1976 and continued her career as a professor at UWEC until retiring in 1985. She was a devoted Den-mother for Cub Scouts, an active member of the League of Women Voters, helped organize the early years of the renowned Viennese Ball and established an in-residence summer foreign language camp in Northern WI.
In retirement, Hilde and John lived at Charter House in Rochester, MN. That gave them flexibility to travel world-wide. Skiing, biking and hiking were also part of their retirement years along with spending quality time with grandchildren (5) and more recently great grandchildren (4). Several years after John’s passing and the reemergence of life after COVID, Hilde moved to The Garden at the Classic at Hillcrest, Altoona, WI in 2021. A special thank you from Hilde’s extended family goes out to all her caregivers. For the past 2 ½ years, she was cared for with kindness and grace by all the staff. A heartfelt thank you to the St Croix Hospice team as well. The compassion shown by everyone will be forever appreciated.
