George Edward Wendt, age 87, passed away peacefully at his home on November 30. He was born to Lawrence and Gerry Wendt on October 12, 1936, in Eau Claire.
George was quite an athlete in his younger years. He especially excelled in hockey where he was named the most valuable player in his senior year at Memorial High School. In high school he met the love of his life Geraldine “Geri” Wilsey at a high school play. They eventually married and began life in Rochester MN. Not too many years past and he moved the family back to Eau Claire. In 1969 he found the family home on Riverview Drive. It was an old farmhouse in the valley, just below the airport. It needed a lot of work, but that did not dissuade him or Geri from moving forward. Hard work and dedication were something they did not shy away from. And with that grit, they refurbished the house where he would stay until his death.
He had several jobs, selling encyclopedias and insurance, dry walling contractor, machinist, and eventually in 1969 with Ed Phillips & Sons. He stayed with Ed Phillips & Sons until he was 50 years old, when he received a retirement offer he couldn’t refuse. He was one of those few lucky people who were able to retire young and enjoy life. And enjoy life he did. Hunting and fishing were staples in his life, but he also enjoyed golfing, working in the yard, and helping others. Plus, he became the house manager as Geri continued her career.
George is survived by his three children, Anthony (Tony), Jayne, and Mark, his sister, Ann Gunderson, 7 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his partner, Mary Knickerbocker and her family. He was predeceased by his wife, Geraldine Louise Wendt (Wilsey); brother, Lawrence Wendt; his parents, Lawrence and Geraldine Wendt-Gunderson; and his stepfather Gale Gunderson.
