Gary Johnson

Gary D. Johnson, age 88 of Altoona, passed away on Thursday, February 13, 2025 at Prairie Point in Altoona. Gary was born on October 23, 1936 in Durand to the late Oscar and Louise (Mikelson) Johnson.

He married Marlene Garson and they were married for 62 years. Marlene passed away on January 10, 2019.

Gary enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, traveling, spending time at the cabin and going to the casino. He was his kids little league coach and he enjoyed watching his grandchildren's sporting and other events. Gary was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church in Eau Claire.

He was very proud of working for the papermill for 43 years.

Survivors are his children: Scott (Terri), Todd (Becky), Cheri (Jeff) Hugdahl, Jerry (Mary) and David (Christine); grandchildren: Sara, Melisa (Joel), Jeremy, Josh, Heather (Luke), Crystal (Derrick), Jeffrey Jr., Tabitha (Max), Tiffany (Dale), Emily (Alex), Ben, Abby (Karl), Madeline (Dakota), Meredith, Sophia and Gunnar; 15 great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

Preceding him in death are his parents, wife Marlene, brothers and their spouses Merrill "Bub" (Burma Jean), Orlin "Bill" (Irene), Vernon (Leona) and his sister and her husband Betty "Tootie" (Harold) Lind.

The family would like to send a special thank you to Cassandra and her team at St. Croix Hospice for their exceptional care.

A memorial service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 19, 2025 at St. John's Lutheran Church, 1804 Highland Ave, Eau Claire with Pastor Christine Emerson officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until time of service. Burial will take place at a later date at Rest Haven Cemetery.
