Detra Hanscom

May 18, 1955 — June 12, 2024

Detra Mae Hanscom born on May 18, 1955, passed away at Dove South on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at the age of 69.  She was the daughter of Thelma Alice (Jensen) and Harold Louis Metzenbauer. Detra graduated from Cadott High School in 1973 and pursued a career as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). She worked at several institutions including the Northern Wisconsin Center, Chippewa Manor, and PALS House. Throughout her career, Detra found deep fulfillment in caring for others and developed enduring friendships with those she cared for and worked with. Her dedication to her profession enriched the lives of many under her care.

Driven by an adventurous spirit, Detra ventured beyond her home state, traveling to Texas with her close friend Pam. Settling in Houston, she resumed her work as a CNA, where she crossed paths with her future husband, Frank. Frank, a disabled veteran, quickly became more than a client as their relationship blossomed into love. They were married on August 4, 1984. Sharing a mutual love for adventure, they purchased a camper and embarked on journeys across the United States. Eventually, they decided to make their home in Port Charlotte, Florida, where they enjoyed hosting family and friends, taking them out on their boat, or cooling off in their pool.

After Frank’s passing in 1999, Detra returned home to Wisconsin. She enjoyed photography, playing cards, and anything with arts and crafts. Her dogs and cats brought much joy to Detra. She later met Dave Fink, a talented drummer who played in many bands. She enjoyed watching Dave play and traveling around on his motorcycle. They enjoyed 22 years of happiness together. Dave was a godsend to Detra, taking over everything in the last few years of her life which allowed her to stay at home instead of moving into a nursing home. Her niece Brenda was also a great help to her in this regard, not only as one of her best friends but as a constant companion in her life.

Detra is survived by her partner of twenty-two years, Dave Fink; stepdaughters Desere Woods and Kasandra Ruskay, step-granddaughter Aveline Woods, sister, Lois Krall; sister-in-law Cathy Metzenbauer; brother-in-law Richard Guckenberg; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Frank, her parents, sister Judie Guckenberg, brother William Metzenbauer, brother-in-law Jerome Krall, niece Christine Krall, and nephew Andrew Sonnentag.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 29, 2024, from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. at White’s Wildwood Retreat at 18059 Cty Hwy OO, Chippewa Falls, WI  54729.
