Delores Baker

August 27, 1936 — February 21, 2021

Delores Ruth Baker, 84 of Thorp, WI died peacefully on Sunday, February 21st, at Clark County Rehabilitation and Living Center with her family by her side.

Delores or “Sis” as her siblings would call her (because the youngest sister could not pronounce Delores) was born to Clyde Lavern and Virginia May (Poulin) Baker in Milwaukee, WI on August 27, 1936. She attended North Division High School in Milwaukee through the 10th grade. Her mother was ill, and she needed to work and assist in the care of her siblings. Delores worked at Nunn Bush Shoes and The Health Institute in Milwaukee. She met her future husband William Baker on a blind date arranged through mutual friends. They discovered that they both had the same common last name of Baker and they were not related! Bill and Delores were married September 3, 1955 by Father Kelly at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Milwaukee. They made their home in Milwaukee for the first 15 years of their marriage and had four children, Lynne (Joseph) Komanec of Gilman, WI, Kevin and (Marge) Baker of Gilman, Karen and (the late Brian) Shelton of Torrence, CA and Lori (Rodney) Alger of Thorp, WI.

After their marriage, Bill started a construction business building homes in the greater Milwaukee area. Delores kept a nice home for her family and assisted Bill with the business.

In 1970, they moved their family to the Gilman area where Bill grew up. Delores was a homemaker and worked as a waitress on weekends at Decker’s Country Inn for many years where she was loved by many of her customers for her kindness and witty sense of humor. She loved true crime novels, dancing and every type of music; (except jazz). Delores loved going to Treasure Island Casino in Red Wing, not so much to gamble but to enjoy the live music, friends and dancing. She was a fabulous cook and made many batches of chocolate chip cookies over the years.

She was preceded in death by her parents Clyde and Virginia, and siblings Clyde Jr. “Buddy” (Marilyn) Baker, of Milwaukee and Virginia (Jerry) Dohm of Eau Claire, WI. She is survived by her children, her sister Sandy (John) Gasperetti of Waukesha, WI, and Bob (Lynne) Baker of Hudson, WI. Grandchildren Jessica (Donald) Syryczuk of Lublin, WI, Joey Lynne (Barry) Hartle of Augusta, WI, Joshua (Breanna) Komanec of Chippewa Falls, WI, Laura (Wesley) Hakes of Cadott, WI, and Eric Milas of Lublin, WI, Katherine Shelton of Torrence, CA and Nathan Shelton of Torrence, CA. Great grandchildren Jack, Sam, Joey and Danielle Syryczuk, Christopher Komanec, Delaney Copus, and Dustin, Brooklyn and Hailey Hakes.

Delores was a loving and caring daughter, wife, sister and friend who will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved her. We know she is with God and her family who has gone before her.

A small private family celebration of Delores’ life will be held at a later date.

Cremation Society of Wisconsin is assisting the family.
