Charles Doty
January 11, 1940 — May 28, 2024
Charles (Charlie) Taylor Doty
,
age 84
, of Hudson, WI, passed away peacefully on May 28,
2024.
Charlie was born in Gregory, SD, on January 11, 1940. He grew up in Nebraska near Butte on the Niobrara River where he learned to love the outdoors, fish, hunt, farm and fix anything with whatever was available. Charlie shared memories of farming with horses, attending a 1 room schoolhouse, and having electricity first run to his farm when he was 14. At that time, a teacher challenged him to write an essay about future careers. This motivated him to eventually earn a master’s in electrical engineering from the University of NE, in Lincoln.
Charlie went to work for 3M in St. Paul MN as an electrical engineer. He was soon introduced to the love of his life through mutual friends from back home. He married Barbara (Barb) Martin on November 21, 1964. They were married for nearly 60 years when Barb passed away in 2023.
After Charlie retired from 3M, he continued satisfying his technical curiosity by working in technical sales for Midmac until Charlie and Barb decided to focus on retirement, full time. They purchased a 5
th
wheel camper and traveled the country. Eventually, they parked their camper in the Boot Heel area of NM near Rodeo each winter. They enjoyed exploring the southwest, hiking, buying doo-dads, and expanding their network of friends.
Charlie had a close group of life-long friends including his cousins from NE & SD, friendships formed in Jaycees of Hudson, at 3M, and Emmanuel Lutheran Church.
From his early days on the farm until the end of life, Charlie was a commensurate tinkerer. He loved working with wood, polymers, blacksmithing, wire forms and was always improving electrical and mechanical devices. His designs were uniquely creative, and he was never found without a pen in his pocket…always ready to sketch an idea on paper.
Charlie is survived by children Kelsie and Alan (Tammy), and was the proud grandfather of Alexandria, Megan, Jessie, and Austin. Charlie is also survived by his sister Lynda (Gale) Powell, brother Bob, cousins, and friends.
Charlie is preceded in death by wife Barb (Martin), and his parents Lynn and Jessie Doty.
Charlie’s family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to Pine Ridge assisted living, St. Croix Hospice, Touching Hearts, Health Partners, Emmanual Lutheran Church and a long list of friends & family for their care and compassion given to Charlie through his battle with cancer. The project list is finally complete.
