Betty Debord

Betty L. DeBord, age 95 of Eau Claire, passed away on Tuesday, January 30, 2024 at Our House Senior Living in Eau Claire. Betty was born on May 13, 1928 in Solon Springs, WI to the late Joseph P. Beaupre Sr. and the late Dorothy O. (Lucius) Beaupre.
She graduated from St. Croix High School in 1946. After raising her children, Betty earned her LPN degree from Superior Technical College. She started her career in nursing at the Spooner Hospital and later at the Northern Center for the Developmentally Disabled in Chippewa Falls, where she worked for 17 years until her retirement.
Betty married Leonard “Jack” Bay in 1947 and together they had 3 children. She later married Loren DeBord. They were married 47 years.
Betty and Loren fulfilled a dream of theirs to have a horse farm “Khejan Arabians”, aptly named for their first horse, Khejan Dancer. They spent many wonderful years on “The Ranch” before moving to their current home.
She was a proud tribal member of the Lac Courte Oreille Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians. Her 80th birthday was celebrated by receiving her Native American name - Assinawaabiiikwe (White Stone Woman) and her wish that her children also receive their Native American names was realized as well.
Betty is survived by her husband Loren; children: Marcia (Bill) Hock of Eau Claire, Patti (Ken Slack) Bay of Wausau/Madison and Gary (Chris) Bay of Superior; step-children: Shelly (Dan) Hannafin of Eau Claire, Rick DeBord of Taylorsville, KY and Rhonda (Bob) Kunferman of North Carolina; grandchildren: Christin Root of Atlanta, GA, Tracy (Brooks) Harrison of Eau Claire, Brandon Root of Stanley, WI, Joe (Angie) Zitzelsberger of Waunakee, WI, Aaron (Sarah) Zitzelsberger of Oregon, WI and Holly (Scott) Holmquist of Superior; step-granddaughter Katie (Quinn Evans) Hannafin of Inver Grove Heights, MN; great-grandchildren: Kateri Zitzelsberger, Lily Holmquist, Zakk Holmquist, Paighton Harrison, Jack Zitzelsberger and Grant Zitzelsberger; stepbrother David (Ted) Heidtke of Gainesville FL; special cousin Victoria (Gary) Jerome of LCO – Hayward, WI; brothers and sisters in law: Barb Reidl of Slinger, WI; Doug and Audrey DeBord of Hartland, WI; Phil and Joy DeBord of Jackson WI; Brian and Sue DeBord of Brookfield WI and Debbie DeBord of Wauwatosa, WI. She is further survived by other relatives and friends.
Preceding her in death are her parents, her stepfather Clifford Heidtke, and her brother Joseph “Sonny” Beaupre Jr.
Betty’s home for the last several years was Our House Memory Care in Eau Claire and the family would like to thank the staff, who became her family, for all their love and care. Special thanks to Mom’s hospice nurse, Cassie, as well as all the loving caregivers at Moments Hospice and St. Croix Hospice who helped us navigate Mom’s care in her final year. You will never know how much comfort you were to Mom and to the family. Also, Chaplin Jim (and Dudley the therapy dog) for bringing a smile to Mom’s face whenever you visited.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 10, 2024 at Stokes, Prock & Mundt Funeral Chapel, 535 S. Hillcrest Parkway, Altoona with Chaplin Jim Opgenorth officiating. Visitation will be from 10:30 until time of service. Burial will be at Rest Haven Cemetery, Eau Claire.
