Aylen "Harper" Bain
June 17, 2005 — May 9, 2024
Aylen Jordan Bain
Aylen Jordan Bain (A.J., Harper) entered the world as Benjamin Thomas Bain on June 17, 2005. She brought a light to her parents, Thomas and Jennifer (Maule) Bain, and taught them to see the beauty, magic, and miracles in the world around them. In 2008, she was joined by her brother, Sam, and from that point on our family was complete.
Aylen had a natural talent for reading and writing. At a young age, she memorized her favorite books and could read long passages by heart. She grew to be a voracious reader, reading through multiple series of books, and remarked often that, “The best books always begin with a map.” Aylen was often on the hunt for journals, and filled them regularly, writing her stories and thoughts.
Aylen attended school at the School District of Altoona from 4-K through graduation in 2023, where she was known as Harper. Her teachers noticed her for her intelligence, her creativity, but most of all for her kindness towards others. Her classmates and friends felt the same way, and expressed that when Aylen was outside of the classroom, hanging out with them, her personality really shined. She took the time to pursue many activities during high school including Academic Decathlon, Forensics, Track, Cross Country, National Honors Society, Choir, and Show Choir. Her hard work earned her a place in the 2023 freshman class at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, where she majored in Wildlife Ecology. In addition to school, over the past few years, Aylen worked for the School District of Altoona with both the summer technology and maintenance crews, at Dunkin’ Donuts on the westside of Eau Claire, and at Buffalo Wild Wings in both Eau Claire and Madison.
Aylen found peace in the nature that surrounded her. She enjoyed walking in Sherman Creek Park, geocaching at various parks throughout the Chippewa Valley with friends, and most recently found peaceful moments at the UW Madison Lakeshore Nature Preserve. She loved geology and had an interest in Native American culture. We will continue to find her spirit in her favorite places, the shores of Lake Superior, and Devil’s Lake State Park.
Regrettably, Aylen was not able to see the light in herself that so many people saw in her. She owed us so many more stories by the campfire.
Aylen is survived by her parents, Thomas and Jennifer (Maule) Bain, her brother, Sam Bain, her cat, Junie B., her paternal grandparents, Larry and Judy Bain, her maternal grandparents, Bill and Jane Maule, and a large number of very special aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
The family would like to thank the staff at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the Madison Emergency Services Department, the staff at UW Health Hospital Trauma and Life Support Center ICU, the staff at the School District of Altoona, the staff at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Eau Claire, and countless friends and family members who have offered care and support during this difficult time.
Our family has been touched by kindness during this experience. In lieu of flowers, we request that you send positive energy out into the world to make it a better place. Please help a friend, talk to a stranger who might need a friend, or perform a deliberate act of kindness in Aylen’s memory.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 (NOON) on Friday, May 17, 2024 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 1804 Highland Ave., with the Rev. Eric Nielson officiating. Visitation will be held Thursday, May 16 at the church from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and again on Friday from 11:00 a.m. until time of service. Burial will be at Rest Haven Cemetery, Town of Washington, on Friday at 2:45 p.m.
